7 Ways to Create Self-Discipline for Success

1 – Define success for yourself

In order to actually reach the success you want in life, you have to first know exactly what success is for you. How do you define success for yourself? What does it look like?

These are very important questions to ask yourself because, without a clear picture of how you want your future to look like, you have no target to aim at.

Imagine that you could live the perfect life, just how you want it to be. There are no compromises, you can have anything – What would your life look like? What kind of person would you want to be? What lifestyle do you want to have? What would you do all day long?

Ask yourself those kinds of questions for different areas of life: career, finances, family, health…

⇒ Know how your ideal life looks like!

Now ask yourself: What would I need to do more or less of, to create my perfect life? What steps do I need to take?

Now you have a target to aim for and a road to travel on.

2 – Do your own thing

In today’s society, people are easily influenced by others. They value the opinion of another person more than their own. In order for you to succeed, you should develop the habit of doing your own thing. Live the life you want. Do the things you want.

Let’s say you want to lose some weight because you don’t feel good and don’t like the picture of yourself in the mirror. You decide for yourself to start today. Two hours later you are in a restaurant with your friends and family. You discuss what food to order and they hear you want to order a salad. They then say: “You really don’t need to lose weight!” “Men don’t eat salad.” “Dude, enjoy the evening!” – You start to listen to them and order a beefy stake with a huge bowl of fries. You have valued the opinion of friends and family higher than your own.

Most often it’s not that you don’t know what to do, but you simply don’t have the discipline to make yourself do what you should. Develop habits that serve you and listen to your own ideas and ideals, because that’s the only way to can achieve the results you want.

3 – Improve your skills

If you want to reach a higher position in a video-game, what’s the first thing you do? You start to improve your skills, whether in the game or your own skills, operating the game.

The problem is, most people don’t implement this kind of mentality in their own lives.

The more you know and the more skills you have and apply, the more valuable you become and the more success you will see in your life. You must upgrade your skills in order to upgrade your paychecks.

And that’s true for every area of your life. Do you want to be a racing driver? – Upgrade your skills! You want to become a better father or mother? Upgrade your skill! Do you want to be a better cook? Upgrade your skill!

You must also be willing to work harder than anybody else. Who is going to win the battle? The one who trained hard day and night for two years, or the dude who just got up from the couch watching Netflix? I guess the answer is clear.

If you want to work hard, you must develop self-discipline first. You must be willing to do what others don’t want to. It’s only when you overcome the natural tendency to cut corners and take the easy way, that you are able to succeed. Lasting success is only possible when you discipline yourself to work hard for a long time.

Do you want to be a better parent? Taking them to the zoo won’t cut it. Do you want to get in shape? Don’t expect the first visit to the gym will do much for you. You must be persistent in doing the things that lead to success.

Determine the skills you need for success in the area of your choice and practice them, until you achieve what you want. Do what other successful people do. → Whatever you put in, you get out. Do more of the things that lead to success.

4 – You must be willing to do it

Successful people are willing to pay the price and do whatever it takes. They go to the gym five times a week. They read a book every month. They reach out for experts and ask them how they can improve.

Today most people want events. They don’t want to build a company over five years to make millions, they play in the lottery and hope to get the millions tomorrow. People aren’t willing to make the effort of learning, improving and actin. They want it NOW. And here is the problem. If you skip the process, you skip on success. It is a process to get fit. It is a process to build a company. It is a process to improve your relationship.

You must pay the full price in advance in order to get what you want. So start today to do what is necessary.

5 – Learn from experts

Learn from people that have already achieved what you want to achieve. They know how to do it and they can help you. Often it’s as easy as doing the exact same thing they did to get the same results.

You must learn what you need to learn in order to achieve the success you desire. Buy books, go to seminars, get information on the internet to ask people you know who have achieved what you want. Continually seek ideas from experts in your field. You may eventually come across one thing that changes everything for you.

6 – Continuous action

You must work continually on your goals, every single day. You must build momentum, a forward motion, to get to your destination fast.

In order to achieve that, you again need self-discipline. You must force yourself to do what you should, even when you don’t feel like it. Working on our goals is easy when we are enthusiastic and full of energy, but when we don’t feel great, it can be hard for the necessary things. Therefore you should develop habits that carry you through those difficult times, so you keep momentum and don’t lose motivation.

You should never stop improving, learning and getting better at what you do. You should upgrade your skills every day. You either grow and get bigger by learning and improving your skills, or otherwise, you will get smaller – There is no in between.

7 – Why you should do it

Developing self-discipline in any area you like is hard, but it is easier when you know why you do it. There should be a reason behind your aim. Do you want to look better? Do you want your kids to be the best they can? Do you want to have enough money to buy your family a great home? – Whatever it is, attach a “why” to your aim.

Each step you take to become someone better makes you feel more happy, confident and fulfilled. “Success is less about the money and more about the person you become.” When you enjoy the process of developing self-discipline and becoming a better person, you will feel better every day.
